Is your pediatric practice new to screening families for maternal depression, child development, and social determinants of health? Learn techniques to jump start conversations about these important topics.
Screening Time: Tuning into the Needs of Families™ is a role-play simulation where you take the role of a pediatric healthcare professional and engage in a series of practice conversations with a virtual family at their child's 2-month, 24-month and 36-month well child visits. Through these scenarios, you will practice broaching the subject of a positive screening for:
Maternal depression
Developmental concerns
Food insecurity
Then you will follow through with an effective, family-centered discussion about how to address the issue that was raised.
Using techniques drawn from Motivational Interviewing (MI), you will practice shared decision-making with families by asking open-ended questions, reflecting their concerns, showing empathy, and respectfully sharing information. By exploring the ways that different screenings reveal a more comprehensive picture of a child's family environment and development, you will see the benefit that these screenings can provide in your own practice.
